Starting April 19, I’ll be teaching my first workshop at Inprint, a Houston-based literary arts organization that features a wealth of community programs, from classes to readings to community events. This multi-genre online workshop will be six weeks long, and will offer students the opportunity to explore their work and learn new writing strategies in fiction, poetry, and nonfiction.

I’ve taught creative writing classes at the University of Washington and at Open Books: A Poem Emporium, a poetry bookstore in Seattle. But this is my first opportunity to work directly with the Houston community, and I’m so thrilled.

What to expect from this writing workshop

You may be completely new to writing, or you may be seeking out new strategies and techniques to jump-start your work. Wherever you are on your writing journey, I’ve designed this workshop to equip you with a whole range of new ideas and skills.

This is a generative workshop, meaning we’ll spend a lot of time creating new work, whether it’s fiction, poetry, or nonfiction. We’ll try exercises that will help you work on your imagery, play with metaphor, and explore narration and voice. Most, if not all, of the exercises we do will be useful no matter what genre you’re writing in.

We’ll also have a chance to share some of our work and get feedback from our classmates!

The class will be completely online, and conducted via Zoom. So you don’t actually have to be in Houston to participate. Like I said, all are welcome!

The class will take place once a week on Mondays, at 6:30–8:30 p.m. CT, from April 19 through May 24. Click the button below to learn more about the workshop!
